U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle looks on during a news conference at the Secret Service's Chicago field office on June 4, 2024.

In her first public statement since the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle said Monday that the agency will “fully participate” in an independent review ordered by President Joe Biden and that the agency will cooperate with Congress “in all oversight actions.”

Cheatle, who was appointed by Biden in 2022, expressed confidence in the agency’s security plans for the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee this week and said Trump’s security detail has changed since Saturday.

“The Secret Service has a tremendous responsibility to protect the current and former leaders of our democracy,” Cheatle said. “This is a responsibility that I take very seriously, and I am committed to fulfilling that mission.” Questions

about the agency’s preparedness have swirled in the aftermath of Saturday’s shooting that wounded the former president, killed one attendee and critically injured two others.
